The whole DC realunch has been exciting and awful. A lot of titles looks great. But the ones I absolutley love are being fucked with. Secret Six is gone entirely. Teen Titans has kicked off some of my favorite characters (Ravager!)  and made old ones completely different (did they just turn prissy bitch Wonder Girl into my tough-as-nails Ravager…?). But the one that hurts the most is the above image. I was psyched to Superboy still in Teen Titans. I was excited that he looked like a little punk instead of a football jock. But then his solo series cover comes out and it looks like he is now a robot. :| What’re are you doing to me DC?

At the end of August the entire DC line is getting a reboot. Everything, including Action Comics (which recently suprassed issue 900), is getting a new #1. Updated origins. New costumes. No convoluted backstories. A perfect jumping on point for anyone. Everything will be available digitally.
There is no god. I’m excited. I’m hesitant. I kinda don’t wanna buy anything until August since its all moot.

dcu:

A review of the Wonder Woman pilot that NBC passed on is available and the review is shockingly positive. I guess if the show was good, it’s no wonder NBC didn’t pick it up. That network has no clue what they’re doing anymore (like green-lighting awful series The Cape anyone?).
CLICK HERE to read about what we missed out on. Can not wait until this thing makes it’s way online…

Damn, this better leak online because I really wanna see it. Wonder Woman needs to be treated like a major player, and from what it sounds like this pilot avoided sexist and pitiful pitfalls that the script called for and managed to create and strong warrior who is still human and relatable.

July can not come soon enough!
Here is the official description for SUPERGODS:

From one of the most acclaimed and oracular writers in the world of comics comes a thrilling and provocative exploration of humankind’s great modern myth: the superhero.
For Grant Morrison, possibly the greatest of contemporary superhero storytellers, these heroes are not simply characters but powerful archetypes whose ongoing, decades-spanning story arcs reflect and predict the course of human existence: Through them, we tell the story of ourselves. In this exhilarating book, Morrison draws on history, art, mythology, and his own astonishing journeys through this alternate universe to provide the first true chronicle of the superhero-why they matter, why they will always be with us, and what they tell us about who we are.

Grant Morrison writing a novel that delves into the giant and subtle metaphors alive and thriving within contemporary comic books? I’m buying 80 of these, just to read a remarkable man’s opinion of modern story telling practices in a medium I love, 80 times. I’m so fucking excited.

Here’s my group’s final 6 page comic for Digital Imaging Fundamentals:

I wrote and lettered it. Although I have to say, the artist did change a bit of the story around (at least the paneling of it). As a result I think that page 5 makes little to no sense. But you decide.  Click the little gray boxes below if you’re viewing this in the tumblr dashboard:

Why Brightest Day didn’t work:

  • It was a maxi-series spun out of a mini-series originally intended to be a Green Lantern event. Talk about lack of a defined focus.
  • It’s about life and White Lanterns but there aren’t any colored-corp members to speak past the introduction
  • People’s resurrections were sometimes explained to have had greater meaning and significance to the machinations of the plot
  • But some were just swept under the bus. Cpt. Boomerang was brought back JUST to kill someone? How did that have anything to do with reinstating the balance of nature? Gimmick is gimmicky.
  • Also, the plot doesn’t become apparent until issue 23. There are 24 issues in this damn series. The majority of it was like walking blindfolded.
  • And the payoff makes no sense to me. Swamp Thing and John Constantine back in the DC continuity? Great, I don’t really know those characters, wasn’t this a damn Green Lantern thing originally?

And maybe its just because I’ve never read any Swamp Thing stuff, but I found it kind of strange the heroic climax of this series was to resurrect the skeletal remains of a man, turn him back into a human and then make him submit to becoming a monster that is solely made out of vegetation. I was more scared for that character losing his humanity than feeling awe-inspired and rooting for him to become this over-glorified character that apparently has been sorely missed by the comics community. That’s fucking weird. That’s fucking comics.

I’m a fucking nerd.

Cassie quit?

So this is the second time that the Superboy series has mentioned something happening in the Teen Titan series before it happens. Which is kind of annoying. The first was when Conner mentioned they weren’t together to Lori and now we have Conner saying Cassie quit, when she hasn’t yet.

Stop messing with me DC.

Photoshop class assignment: make yourself look like an action figure. So I chose to try and make myself look like a Green Lantern toy. It’s meh. It’s really hard to get your skin to look like it is painted plastic and not just a matte surface. To that end, I tried sticking some shiny spots on my face but they’re subtle (on my chine, below the mask on my cheek and above the mask on my brow). And then all I did was liquify some lego dude’s hair, slap it on, mess with a green lantern mask and slap it on as well. And then shazam, you get my mediocre me as a Green Lantern action figure. If my Photoshop didn’t suddenly realize that I was using it beyond the trial period, I would try to go back and adjust the lighting on the head, but alas, I don’t have 500 bucks to go buy the student Creative Suite.

I really like the new Superboy series. Jeff Lemire is not someone I would have pegged as being able to write superheroes, but his ability to capture small town nuance makes him a great fit for adventures in Smallville. That said, dear god I wish the art was better. This page is just so anatomically strange. Limbs don’t work like that. And I hate the way this artist draws a t-shirt as muscle-tight spandex. And sometimes I swear, between the odd drawing of the eyes and the strange color palette being used, Superboy looks Pacifican-Islander. Bah, poop art.
